Grimley Raceway 27th March , West Country Challenge Cup
Report from Marc de Land

Twelve cars made the journey to Worcester for the first meeting of the season, Chris Neal was making his debut and arrived with a very smart looking car, Also Jonathan Pooley's new car looked the business. So, on to race one. Leon Retchless took up the lead while Pete Dorrell moved up to second ahead of Carl Checkley and Luke Retchless, Gordon Pooley got ahead of Andrew Bilby from the Blue grade while in the reds Cliff Bunn was ahead of Steve Young, Neil Clarke slid wide to allow Jonathan Pooley passed and Chris Neal was starting to get to grips with his new car. On lap 4 Cliff spun out on his own water as the core plug came out of this engine, Gordon had now moved up to third while Jonathan was soon up to fourth. Leon's lead was slowly being reduced, While Gordon was dicing with Pete, Jonathan moved to the inside to take Gordon then on Turn 3-4 went around the outside of Pete to take second.

On lap 6 Neil Clarke managed to get passed Andrew though it was hard work, Pete Dorrell was starting to have some sort of trouble as he slipped down the field,

Starting lap 7 Leon was trying to pass Carl and Pete who was having there own battle this allowed Jonathan to close right up behind Leon, And Jonathan was trying every thing to make a pass but Leon kept a tight inside line on the bends so the no 31 car had to try to take him on the outside, on the start of last lap Jonathan managed to get right along side but slipped a little wide going into turn 1 and that was the chance gone. So Leon took the first win of the season and his second of his career Well done.

There was no Heat two due to the meeting over running so we went straight into the final.

It was Leon who made a good start. Carl Checkley got ahead of Luke Retchless and was trying to close the gap to Leon. In the blue grade Gordon pased Chris Neal but Andrew Bilby was finding it a little harder in the BMC. Jonathan Pooley Passed Neil Clarke and then set about Steve Young, By lap 5 there was a train of cars with Leon still holding onto his lead from Carl, then came Gordon Pooley Steve Young Jonathan Pooley Neil Clarke then a small gap to Chris Neal and Andrew Bilby. Luke Retchless was having some handling trouble and slipped to the back of the field.

Jonathan managed to pass Gordon and Steve in the same lap then on lap 8 as Carl tried to take Leon on the outside this allowed Jonathan to move to the inside followed by Steve and Gordon, Lap 9 Leon was catching his brother and going into turn 3 took the outside line to pass Luke with Jonathan in close pursuit, but Luke slipped wide and that closed of the space to pass, so Steve Young managed to pass Jonathan and Leon, Jonathan then boxed Leon behind his brother to move up to second then Gordon got up along side come down the home straight and going into turn one Leon was carrying to much speed got on the marbles and slid into the fence, he was so annoyed with himself as he banged his hands on the steering wheel.

With only a lap to go neither Pooley could catch Steve Young who took the West country challenge cup. Carl Checkley did well to keep Neil Clarke behind him to take forth. And a good drive from Chris Neal to finish sixth ahead of Andrew Bilby.
