June Cochrane Cup
Round 11 Yarmouth (June Cochrane Cup)
Heat one saw Leon Retchless the only White
graded driver to lead the cars away, but it was a short start
as the red flags came out before a lap was completed due to
Daniel Pooley's throttle sticking open going into turn three
and he slid of and into the wire fencing. Daniel was ok but
the car did not look too good. On the restart Leon got away
well and further back Pete Dorrell was having a battle with
Carl Checkley, then came Steve Dawson and Marcus Retchless,
Neil Clarke had made a better start ahead of Marc de Land
who was coming under pressure from Steve Young Cliff Bunn
and Jonathon Pooley, By lap five Leon was now a length of
a straight clear of Carl Checkley, Steve Dawson had now moved
up to third Marc de Land went wide in trying to find away
pass Neil Clarke going into turn three this allowed Jonathon
Pooley to pass on the inside, Marc tucked in behind Jonathon
going up the home straight so when he made a move to pass
Neil Clarke Marc followed through as well. Steve young then
passed Neil on the following lap, With five to go Leon was
still leading from Jonathon Pooley then came Steve Dawson
who was defending his third place from Marc de Land closely
followed by Steve Young and Neil Clarke a few car lengths
back. Carl Checkley spun with three laps remaining, thus dropping
him down the order, but it was Leon who took the win and what's
more it was his first win in the GP Midgets.

Well the heavens opened just before the cars
headed for the track for heat two so everyone changed to wet
tyres, Daniel had managed to repair his car just in time andd,
as the green flag came out, Leon lead the field from Pete
Dorrell and Carl Checkley, though the wet conditions caught
Leon out as he exited turn two and spun his car, this was
followed by Steve Dawson spinning towards the infield. Marc
de Land & Neil Clarke were cutting their way through the field
of cars but going into turn one Neil managed to put his car
into a spin too. Back up front Carl was challenging Pete for
the lead. By lap6 Marc de Land made it a three way battle
for the lead coming out of turn two he started to pass Carl
and by the end of the Straight entering pit gate turn took
over the lead from Pete Dorrell, By lap 11 Pete & Carl were
joined by Neil Clarke and Steve Young with Carl trying to
pass Pete exiting turn 2. He went a little wide this allowed
Neil and Steve through a lap later Neil passed Pete to move
up to second, Steve Young then passed Pete around the outside
on turn 3. Cliff Bunn was having a three car battle with Daniel
and Jonathon Pooley had a little coming together on the pit
gate turn in which both had a spin leaving Cliff out on his
own, But it was Marc who took the win and this was Marcs first
win in wet conditions.

With the track slowly drying out Leon Retchless
elected to start at the rear of the field for the final and
this allowed Pete Dorrell to lead the cars away. Carl Checkley
retired straight away with a rear puncture so it was Steve
Dawson who moved up to second and Marcus Retchless third.
Daniel Pooley made a great start and was past all the red
graded cars by the end of lap two. Steve Dawson took up the
lead on lap 4 with a group of six cars closely behind, Daniel
soon passed Marcus in car 41 and then Pete on the same lap,
next up was Steve and exiting turn 4 they touched wheels as
Daniel tried to pass on the inside, by the end of the straight
he was the new leader. Neil Clarke spun on turn one allowing
Cliff Bunn Jonathon Pooley to name a few to pass either side
of him. Two laps later young Leon spun in the same place bring
out a full course yellow, the pace car lead the cars round
while Leons car was pushed off the raceway. On the rolling
restart Daniel soon opened up a good lead from Steve Dawson
who was trying to fend of Jonathon Pooley. Steve Young was
trying to find his way past Cliff Bunn but Steve had his mirrors
full of car 15 Marc de Land, Jonathon was now up to second
Cliff managed to pass Marcus Retchless before turn 3 and this
allowed him to pull clear of Steve Young. As the track started
to dry out Cliff was getting closer to Steve Dawson, and with
5 to run passed Steve, meanwhile Marcus Retchless conceded
to the pressure of Steve Young and Steve took the outside
line going into turn 1, Marc de Land thought he would try
his luck and take both Steve and Marcus but as the gap closed
in front of him thought better of it and passed Marcus down
the back straight, with three to run Daniel was well out in
front with Jonathon second, Cliff was comfortable in third,
Steve Dawson went a little wide allowing Steve Young to pass
Marc de Land followed him through, Neil Clarke and Marcus
Retchless had a close battle to the end of the race. Well
done to Daniel who had an eventful evening's racing and taking
the flag to win the June Cochrane Cup.
