West Country Challenge, Report by Marc de Land

A mostly dry track greeted the drivers for race one. Dry that is apart from turns three and four which was affected by a big area of standing water on the infield which was brought onto the track by any car taking a tight line.

With our new drivers starting at the rear of the field, all the regular drivers lined up in graded order. Newly upgraded driver Pete Dorrell made a great start from Luke Retchless in the early stages. Marc de Land got away from Steve Young but it was not long before Jonathan Pooley caught and passed them. Next in Jonathan's sight was Luke Retchless but Pete Dorrell was still way out in front and holding his lead well. Further down the field Cliff Bunn, who was up to fifth, spun on Lap six in front of Neil Clarke which slightly scuppered the Brummie. Two laps later Jonathan had caught and passed Pete for the lead. Andrew Bilby had to retire at this point with his VW suffering engine problems and this was followed by Steve Young retiring too, this time with ignition issues. Luke Retchless might well have been a victim of the water on turn four as he spun there and that dropped him down the order. Newcomer Derek Hawes was making great progress from the back of the field and so to was Mark Hodges who passed de Land with just two laps remaining. It was Jonathan Pooley who showed he was back to top form with a fine win. Pete Dorrell was a very impressive second with Derek Hawes in third just pipping Marc de Land.

1st 31 Jonathan Pooley, 2nd 8 Peter Dorrell, 3rd 5 Mark Hodges, 4th 28 Derek Hawes, 5th 15 Marc de Land, 6th 9 Phillip Retchless, 7th 19 Leon Retchless, 8th 77 Neil Clarke

Pete Dorrell made another great start in the second race with Marc de Land again coming under pressure from Derek Hawes but at the start of the second lap the newcomer's car's front bottom rose joint broke and Derek was on course for a collision with the Grimley wall. As is the norm in these situations the race was stopped so that Derek could safely get out of his car - he was OK and the race was set for a re-start. Mark Hodges was the man on the move as he cut his way through the field although by lap four Pete Dorrell was still in front, from Mark Hodges, Luke Retchless and Marc de Land who was finding it a bit hard getting past young Luke and this was letting the red grade drivers close the gap. Newcomer Andrew Lewis was getting to grips with his new car he was surrounded by a gaggle of cars. This allowed Jonathan Pooley and Neil Clarke to go on either side of Marc de Land coming out of turn two. This was followed by Cliff Bunn who was staying with Neil and Jonathan. Marc de Land again triedto pass Luke Retchless but got boxed in by Luke's dad, the defending points champion Phil Retchless who moved up to 7th and then 6th after passing his son. Lee Hazeltine kept himself out of trouble to finish 8th but the race had belonged to Mark Hogdes.

1st 5 Mark Hodges, 2nd 31 Jonathan Pooley, 3rd 23 Cliff Bunn, 4th 77 Neil Clarke, 5th 8 Peter Dorrell, 6th 9 Phillip Retchless, 7th 15 Marc de Land, 8th 43 Lee Hazeltine

Everyone made a good start in the final and by lap three Marc de Land had moved into second place passing Luke Retchless. Jonathan Pooley was on a charge again closely followed by Mark Hodges, Clifford Bunn, Daniel Pooley, Neil Clarke and Phil Retchless. They were followed by newcomers Lee Hazeltine and Andrew Lewis. Back at the front de Land had caught Dorrell but Pete was not making it easy for the blue grader and this allowed Jonathan Pooley to make a move. Marc was on the outside and this allowed JP to dive down the inside. JP was in the lead and Marc was now second but within a lap he had Daniel Pooley and Mark Hodges to deal with. Hodges tried the inside and then outside to pass de Land and he made it through with just four laps left. He was closely followed by Daniel Pooley and this meant that the first four cars were all covered by barely six car lengths. With two laps remaining a back marker made things interesting causing de Land to hold back a little but Jonathan Pooley was still in command up front despite some continued pressure from Hodges and Daniel Pooley and he held on to win.

1st 31 Jonathan Pooley, 2nd 5 Mark Hodges, 3rd 32 Daniel Pooley, 4th 15 Marc de Land, 5th 23 Clifford Bunn, 6th 77 Neil Clarke, 7th 8 Peter Dorrell, 8th 9 Phillip Retchless
