1st May 2010, British Championship, Birmingham
Report by Luke Retchless

The meeting started with the prestigious 20 lap British Championship, could Marc de Land repeat last year's amazing performance?

All cars got away cleanly with Andrew Lewis getting away slowly causing a three car bunch up on the first corner, Andrew was soon passed by Gary Grimsley and Luke Retchless followed by Steve Young. Whilst positions changed at the front Jonathan Pooley was having a fantastic drive carving through the red graders closely followed by Phillip Retchless and Daniel Pooley. Gary Grimsley was having a great drive out up front following on from where he left off at Northampton. Within 10 laps Jonathan Pooley had hit the front and was flying like a man on a mission followed by Gary Grimsley, Phil Retchless, and Steve Young. With a few more laps Phillip Retchless was up into 2nd and Steve Young in 3rd. Jonathan wasn't content with being up front alone so decided to catch the rear of the field and go on a lapping spree, taking the win by quite a way.

Result - 1st Jonathan Pooley, 2nd Phil Retchless, 3rd Steve Young, 4th Gary Grimsley, 5th Daniel Pooley, 6th Marc De Land, 7th Luke Retchless, 8th Cliff Bunn

Heat 1

Marc de Land noticed a problem with his car before the race started and he pulled onto the centre green straight away. With the cars lined up away we went with a good start from Andrew Lewis but it was not long before Gary Grimsley and Luke Retchless were with him once again. Gary got round easily however Luke was find it a little more difficult especially when the 38 car got a bit out of shape which caused them both to back off the throttle, this allowed Steve Young to latch onto the back of them. Back down the field Jonathan Pooley was driving well again coming through the field like a warm knife through butter, closely followed by the Phil Retchless Cheetah, Daniel Pooley and Mark Hodges. They soon caught the yellow graders and made Steve Young their next target. On lap 10 Jonathan took the lead once again leaving Steve Young to battle out 2nd position with Phil Retchless. Two laps later 2nd was decided when Phil Retchless passed Steve Young with a late braking manoeuvre. Steve Young was then left to battle with Daniel Pooley for the remaining laps but Daniel could not find a way round. Jonathan took the win again by some distance.

Result - 1st Jonathan Pooley, 2nd Phil Retchless, 3rd Steve Young, 4th Daniel Pooley, 5th Mark Hodges, 6th Gary Grimsley, 7th Cliff Bunn, 8th Luke Retchless

Heat 2

Before the beginning of the third race Gary Grimsley announced that he had sold his car to a spectator there on the day and would not be racing the final race. There was a feeling of disappointment coming from the other drivers as we knew that this would be Gary's last meeting. We would all like to wish Gary the very best for the future and hope he doesn't become a stranger to the club. I personally have enjoyed racing with him and hope that one day he will return to the formula.

Every cloud has a silver lining and it burst just before the third race and the rain began. Luke Retchless led the field being the only yellow grader, followed very closely by Steve Young, it was not long until Steve had taken the lead. The red graders decided to sort themselves out with all drivers jostling for positions. It became no surprise that Daniel Pooley came out leading the pack racing away to catch the leaders by the time Daniel had completed a lap at the head of the reds he had passed Luke Retchless who had spun on corner 3. This only left Steve Young to catch. Behind Daniel the other drivers where battling still for positions with Marc de Land having a good race after his heat 1 disappointment, followed very closely by Jonathan Pooley. Luke Retchless managed to get back on the track but only 2 laps later lost all power and caused the race to go under caution. After the safety car had cleared on lap 6 Daniel took the lead from Steve Young. Jonathan Pooley made a pass on Marc de Land and then Steve Young a lap later. Steve Young again was made to work for his 3rd place finish as he and Marc battled with Marc trying very trick in the book but unable to make a move and this was how the race stayed with Daniel Pooley pulling away by three quarters the length of the track to win.

Result - 1st Daniel Pooley, 2nd Jonathan Pooley, 3rd Steve Young, 4th Marc De Land, 5th Cliff Bunn, 6th Phil Retchless
