Robinson's first trophy by Anne Sayell
Nigel Robinson was delighted to take home
the National Championship trophy from the Yarmouth Bank Holiday
meeting as a result of his first win in the formula.
He held off fierce competition from Jonathan
Pooley who despite his best efforts was not able to pass the
BMC Dart. Nigel saw off competition from Steve Brattan and
Cliff Bunn to take the lead fairly early on and drove a faultless
race whilst Jonathan Pooley made his way through the rest
of the field. Passing his father Gordon Pooley and Harry Sayell
quickly Jonathan found little resistance until he met the
2007 newcomer but Nigel held his nerve to win in a dash to
the flag by a whisker. Neil Clarke had his best race for some
time to finish third just ahead of Harry Sayell who ran out
of time to be able to do anything about the Stealth.
The support heats once again belonged to
Jonathan Pooley. His father Gordon had a dire evening with
retirements in the main event and collecting Dave Smith as
suspension failed for a second time in the next race. Neither
car made the final race of the night.
Jonathan's younger brother Daniel had an
excellent last race however with only Jonathan able to find
a way past. Daniel had started the main event as a non qualifier
but with pole position starts for both heats made the most
of an early lead. Robinson faced with two duelling Dastles
in the form of Andrew Hinch and Daniel could only hope for
one of them to make a mistake as he followed in their wake.
In race 2 it was Daniel who spun off leaving Andrew Hinch
to take second. In race 3 it was Hinch who went out as a result
of a collision with Clarke, after a very long dice with Daniel
and the Pooley brothers then headed the field all the way
to the flag. Robinson tried everything possible to overtake
but eventually had to settle for third.
Jason Carnwell had a very disappointing round
having travelled down from Cheshire only to go home after
practice having been sidelined with hub trouble. Jonathan
Pooley's success having narrowed the championship lead to
just 12 points - the closest the championship has been going
into the final 3 rounds for quite some time. All eyes now
will be on Buxton to see if Pooley's Scorpion can overpower
Carnwell's Cheetah on Jason's home turf.
