22nd June, Buxton,
Simon Pashley Cup
By Gavin Terry
John Salter took a
heat win and the Simon Pashley Cup Final in what was a stunning
drive, crossing the line half a lap ahead of the rest of the
field, at Buxton on 22nd June. 10 cars turned out at what
is one of the furthest tracks North, with Dave Smith and Steve
Terry travelling virtually the length of the country to race.
Mark Hodges was also keen to do well at his home circuit.
It also looked likely that either Daz Rycroft or Neil Clarke
would take over as point's leader with the absence of Alan
Buckland.
The first race was
won by John Salter who was able to take the lead fairly soon,
after a quick start from the yellows. Dave Smith also proved
quick all meeting with his rebuilt engine and white grade
starting position. John Salter was followed over the line
by Dave Smith, Peter Bourn, Harry Lowe, Mark Hodges, Daz Rycroft,
Neil Clarke and Ez Walker, who were the only finishers.
The second race saw
Mark Hodges and Peter Bourn attempt to go for the same small
gap in order to avoid a spin by eventual race winner Harry
Lowe. The result was a massive pile up in which Hodges ended
up on top of Bourn in the fence. Both drivers were unscathed,
but had serious car damage putting them out of the final.
Lowe was able to take the lead from the restart, going on
to win from Neil Clarke, Daz Rycroft, Andrew Bilby and Dave
Smith, who were the only finishers. E
ight cars made the
final with John Salter, Steve Terry and Ez Walker curing their
car problems. John Salter was able to take an early lead and
never looked back as he pulled out a significant gap from
the rest of the pack. Dave Smith was able to hold onto his
2nd place, keeping a consistent Neil Clarke at bay in 3rd
who also takes over as current points leader. These were followed
over the line by Andrew Bilby, Daz Rycroft, Harold Lowe who
had spun on lap 3, Ez Walker and Steve Terry, rounded off
the points and only finishers.
