7th June, Birmingham
Wheels, Midlands Challenge
Cup
Gary Bonner won the
final at the Grand Prix Midgets only Incarace venue of the
2003 season, at Birmingham Wheels on 7th June, fending off
some fierce competition from the yellow grade drivers. Eleven
drivers made the journey to Birmingham but despite the low
turnout the meeting saw some very close wheel-to-wheel racing,
which made up for the lack of cars. This meeting was also
the first this season for local Birmingham driver Ez Walker
in his Westfield, and for Dave Smith in his Bullet, complete
with rebuilt engine only completed at 3:30 that afternoon!!!
The first race was
won by Ez Walker after taking the lead on the second to last
lap after Peter Bourn who had looked set to take the win had
to pull off due to the car cutting out because of coil problems.
Gary Bonner also did well from the blues taking second with
Andrew Bilby, Daz Rycroft, Neil Clarke, Alan Buckland, Gary
Jones, and Steve Terry rounding off the top eight with no
other finishers.
The second race saw
a deserved win for Peter Bourn taking his first victory of
the season. Only nine started the race as Steve Terry had
to pull of due to oil spillage and John Salter had problems
with his fuel pump. Gary Bonner and Gary Jones also made contact
coming out of the first turn, which resulted in both having
to pull out of the race. Peter Bourn was followed closely
over the line by Ez Walker, Andrew Bilby, Neil Clarke, Daz
Rycroft and Alan Buckland, who were the only finishers.
The Midland Championship
final saw local driver Ez Walker take the early lead, closely
followed by fellow yellow grade driver Peter Bourn in what
was a very successful night for them, taking two out of the
three wins. The final however was dominated by Gary Bonner
who was able to close down and eventually pass the two yellow
grade drivers, and take the lead. John Salter was also flying,
and was only just kept off the podium in the closing laps
by Peter Bourn. Gary Bonner took the victory, followed by
Ez Walker who had been quick and consistent all night, Peter
Bourn, John Salter, Andrew Bilby, Neil Clarke, Daz Rycroft
and Alan Buckland, who rounds off the point's scorers. It
was interesting to note that everyone finished the final with
no car failures!
