13th April, Arena Essex Rolling Thunder Show
Report from Paul Jones

The Midgets put on a fantastic show under the lights of Arena Essex Raceway on Saturday evening, Daz Rycroft taking the honours in the Casa Challenge Cup Feature Final. The former kart racer increased his pace in the ex Stuart Haynes VW Venom as the evening reached its climax. Rycroft headed the field as early as the second lap in the feature race after passing Nikki Ricketts and held a half a lap lead. Behind Rycroft a seven car battle was developing dropping to six when Gary Bonner retired with engine problems. Andy Collins then started to use the outside line with great success which Bonner had been using prior to retiring and made the break from the other star drivers. With four laps to go it looked like we were in for a grandstand finish but third place man Andy Smith clipped a back maker rolling spectacularly into the wall bringing out the red flags. Smith walked away from the incident but the car was severely damaged. The results were then taken from the last completed lap, Rycroft being the victor from Collins and a shaken Smith in third. Harry Lowe came home fourth with Rob Sayell having one of his quietest meetings for some time in fifth.
