15th September, Ringwood, World Championship
Rob Sayell successfully defend his 2000 title
despite drawing Row 4 on the grid. Sayell adding the second
World Championship to the successful defence of the European
title earlier in the year for back to back success in the
formula's two biggest events. A third place and win in the
two support races took him to what would now appear to be
an unassailable lead in the National Points Championship lining
him up for a repeat of last year's triple. "I wanted to achieve
something my dad hadn't done and now it looks certain I have!
It was a hard race and at one time I had my doubts but in
the end it all came right - what's more I did it with a BMC
engine probably one of the cheapest in the field" commented
a delighted Sayell Junior. Neil Clarke had his highest ever
result in the World event whilst non qualifier Gary Bonner
achieved third place despite starting half a lap down from
pole sitter Andrew Bilby. Bilby suffered oil pressure problems
and retired whilst early leader Gary Granger who started on
grid two finished fouth.
