2nd September, Alwalton, June Cochrane Trophy

June Cochrane was the linchpin of the Club for many years from the time when we became an independent formula.Staines based driver Chris Phillips scored an emotional victory at Alwalton Raceway on Sunday. Dastle driver Phillips won the June Cochrane Memorial Trophy, but events this week with the loss of Tony Brewer and close friend and fellow midget driver Steve Piggins overshadowed what was Chris's best meeting to date.

The racing commenced with a minutes silence for the two drivers, which was observed with great respect by everybody at the raceway. Rob Sayell won the opening heat from Andrew Bilby and Neil Clarke. The second heat saw Peter Bourne take victory. The feature race of the day saw Phillips pull out a big lead from the yellow grade. Behind Phillips we saw some brilliant close racing with up to eight cars swapping places each lap. After ten laps Bourne and Gary Bonner were putting Phillips under massive pressure, with Sayell struggling to overcome Mark Hodges. The race was brought to a premature end when Bonner spun and hit the fence. The result was declared and there were cheers from the Midget Crowd as Phillips was confirmed the winner.
