15th July - Ringwood - Southern Championship
text from Sayell Racing Website
Allen Herbert took his
first major GP Midget title, when he won the formula's Southern
Championship at the weekend. Rob Sayell was runner up and
won both supporting heats. Anthony Brewer continued his recent
success finishing third in the main event.
The 20-lap championship event was interrupted
twice with stranded cars on the racing line. The first caution
came on lap 4 when Chris Phillips spun out of second place,
Peter Bourne and Brian Gough being caught up in the incident.
Early leader Herbert held on for the win, despite a second
caution on lap 12 when Phillips spun again on the same bend.
Brewer who held second place for 16 laps was pipped to the
post by Rob Sayell with a last bend dive up the inside the
latter, braking hard to avoid hitting leader Herbert up the
back at the flag!
Rob Sayell won both support races by a comfortable
margin extending his driver's championship lead to 56 points
ahead of Mark Hodges who finished 4th in the main event and
third in Race 2.
Harry Sayell also got an unexpected drive
at the weekend, when the P & K car's intended driver, Gordon
Pooley, broke down en route. Sayell Senior, racing a front-engined
car, for the first time finished 4th in Race 3 and commented
afterwards that he "could well be converted" after 22 years
of "rear-engined" driving.
