22nd October, Northampton, Midland
Challenge Cup
The final round of the RESB / Delaware Communications
Midget Grand Prix Championship took place under sunny skies
at Northampton. Although track conditions were less than
favourable the cars produced the exciting and close racing
which has become the hallmark of the class throughout the
year.
In race one, Andrew Bilby held off Barry Goldsby
for 2 laps until the Arrow-Rover out braked' the newcomer
into the pit bend to take the lead. Goldsby held on at the
front for another 5 tours until caught and passed by the VW
of Stuart Haynes and the chasing Dastle of Eddy Ricketts.
Haynes held on to take the flag from Ricketts, Nic Grindrod
and Harry Sayell with Goldsby a good 4th ahead of Andy Collins.
Goldsby set the pace in the second heat and
lasted 8 laps at the front until caught by the Fireball of
Gary Bonner. After a short struggle Bonner took the lead
on the tenth lap with Goldsby holding on well until, with
2 laps to go, his car clipped the armco and broke a rear upright.
Sayell and Ricketts who quickly took up second and third respectively
with Bonner holding on to win from Sayell, Ricketts, Goldsby,
Collins and outgoing front engine champion John Salter.
The twenty lap final was a very fraught affair
as slippery conditions with close racing making it a tense
race. Bilby took a brief lead before losing out to the eager
Bonner on lap 2. A six car pack led by Grindrod gave chase
to Bonner with Sayell, Ricketts, Haynes, Nell Clarke and Salter
all in tow. The pack circulated closely for the second half
of the race with only Sayell able to make it any higher in
the order as he lunged past Grindrod on the final corner to
take second behind Bonner.
Overall meeting victory went to Sayell with
Front engine class honours to Ricketts. Sayell also secured
his sixth consecutive drivers title with 387 points from Grindrod
(297) and Haynes (201). The 1995 Front Engine class was won
by Gary Granger (155) who pipped Sa!ter by just 10 points.
