1995

13th May - Birmingham Wheels

The meeting saw a welcome 1995 debut for Gary Bonner in the Fireball.  Nic Grindrod blew his Alfa engine in practice and lost not only the Championship lead, but also the Graham Hill Trophy which he had won at Birmingham in the pouring rain just twelve months earlier.

Heat one was led by Bonner in the early laps before he and Steve Piggins collided on lap 7 allowing Salter into the lead.  Once the yellow flags were lifted following the Bonner/Piggins contretemps, Sayell and John Weston set about catching Salter who held on to win.

Heat two saw several spinners which also bought this one under yellow flags.  Gary Piper made the early running but was passed on lap 6 by Salter with the VWs of Piggins and Sayell battling behind all the way to the flag,

The thirty lap final saw Allen Herbert set the early pace before Salter raced past at third distance with Sayell going through for second just two tours later.  The pace car came out during the race as Gary Piper pirouetted again and this allowed Sayell to close the gap on Salter.  Birmingham however is a notoriously difficult circuit to overtake on and he ended up barging his way passed perhaps spurred on by the 'Dirty Harry' jest in the last magazine.  Whatever the motive (and one suspects he was just going for it), he collected a black cross from the clerk of the course but was not penalised in the final reckoning.  Salter remained in contention however and the two cars sliced through the field with ease.  Stacker's second place gave him the overall meeting's points victory with John Weston scoring a welcome if overdue third.
