3rd & 4th June, Hi Edge, Buxton British Championship Weekend

Congratulations to the new British Champion and also the weekend's top points scorer, Gary Granger.  Nice also to see John Weston delivering the goods and pushing Gary all the way in the points - it could hardly have been closer.  Other news-worthy points include another South London racer, Scott Roth, rejoining the ranks and getting into the points in the ex-Shreeve Arrow while Barry Goldsby showed that he likes Hi Edge and got his first points of'95.

The weekend was marred by the number of accidents and damage that occurred and was on the whole a meeting most drivers will want to forget.  The first race was put under caution when Junior Haynes and Sayell collided after Gordon Pooley spun in front of them.  This bought out both yellow and red flag waving from the marshals (it's not much better at RAC meetings - Ed.) as Haynes gesticulated frantically from his car stranded in the middle of the pit bend.  The race continued with a provisional win for Wily Weston from Gary Granger.

Heat two was also subject to a re-start when Nic Grindrod, Steve Piggins and Pooley all collided on the home straight with only Piggles able to re-join.  Sayell took this one from the Weston and John Salter.

Race three was the one which inflicted the most damage with Rod Pashley, Stuart Haynes and John Salter all coming off the worse for wear.  Rod led away but was passed by Granger on lap 3. The big crunch came on lap 8. Observers tell me that Haynes went for a gap on the inside of John Salter and Rod Pashley that simply wasn't there (the gap being Rod's car) and the VW catapulted into the fence.  Stuart was knocked unconscious for a few minutes but was given the all clear following a trip to hospital.  Sadly, Rod's Dastle is reported to be beyond repair whilst the Haynes VW lives to shunt another day after holding up very well (safe those dubs aren't they?) Due to the mess, the race result was declared after lap 7 with Granger taking his first win of the season.

The British Championship over 20 laps saw Granger control things from the front after just two laps.  Weston held second for nearly half the race before being, taken by Sayell and Grindrod in succession.  Weston took another win in the second heat and he's now back up in the reds where he belongs whilst Sayell won the final race of the weekend with Granger 2nd, Weston 3rd and Piggins 4th.
