August 1995, Brafield, Bill Boarer Memorial
Report by Anne Sayell
To cut a long story short Brafield should
have belonged to the Wednesbury Warrior, Simon Hiles who won
the first two heats in style and should have taken the final
but, and this is the but... Simon knocked the ignition switch
off as he rounded the final bend and all was lost. It was
a great shame after such a gallant performance all day and
undoubtedly a lesson the; Warrior will not forget!
Heat one saw a runaway victory almost flag
to flag with Simon swiftly reeling in the white grade to take
up the running well before third distance. Steve Piggins
and Neil Clarke gave chase whilst Gary Bonner, Nic Gindrod
and Harry Sayell did battle behind them. Places swapped back
and forth and at one time it seemed Gary Bonner would finish
fourth, Harry fifth and Nic sixth but a death defying charge
by the young blood changed all that and demoted Sonic to sixth
on the line
Heat two saw Simon work for the lead, taking
Ion,-er to overcome the blue and white graders but eventually
in front again. Sonic, now paying more attention, made lighter
work of the reds and was soon mingling with Piggins, Clarke
and Bonner whilst Nic Grindrod paid close call in the pack.
The final outcome saw Simon resist the champ who had to be
content with second. Steve Piggins took third, Nobby Clarke
fourth and Gary Bonner fifth.
The final for the Bill Boarer Memorial should
have Simon's but as mentioned he made a mistake and paid dearly
for it. He had taken the lead with a little more ease than
in the previous heat and was soon under pressure, first from
the blue grade, and then the reds too as they came through.
In the closing stages friend Nic Grindrod put him under considerable
pressure whilst Sonic Sayell waited to pounce in the hope
that Nic would catch Hiles out and he would go through. In
the event Nic and Sonic took a dash for the line in the light
of Simon's demise and there was barely a wheel in it. Meanwhile
a further battle raged between Steve Piggins, Gary Bonner
and Tony Haynes with Gary Granger featuring also.
It's fast becoming a case of don't look away
or you'll miss any number of overtaking moves!!
