August 1994 - Buxton, Simon Pashley Memorial
Report by Anne Sayell
High Edge raceway always throws up very close
competitive racing and this often results in a number of different
winners. This particular meeting was no exception.
Heat one eventually went to Simon Hilles.
I say eventually but in fairness, the Wednesbury Warrior had
the race licked almost front the off, but the following places
were undecided right to the flag with positions swapping to
and fro as the laps rolled by In the long run it was Pop
Haynes who was runner up with Nic Grindrod & Sonic Sayell
in close attention in 3rd and 4th respectively.
Heat two belonged to the blue graders with
Steve Piggins taking the flag and very successfully resisting
Nobby Clarke and Tony Haynes grimly to the end. The places
again swapping at a rate of knots sufficient to make any lap
scorer's heart flutter somehate and little headway was made
by, the back runners with Dick Loseby, Simon Hiles, Weston
and such a fierce battle raging between young Nic and Sonic
for seventh and eighth places they didn't realise the race
had ended!
The final was stopped on the first lap with
Pop Haynes and Gary Bonner colliding and collecting Nic in
the bargain. This relieved the hitherto congestion at the
back of the grid (a regular feature in a very competitive
season) giving the red grade drivers still going a chance
to come through. So it was that Wiley Weston made it to the
front in record time and even though Sonic joined him in the
closing. stages and smoked his tyres on many occasions, lie
was just not able to demote the Wiley one. Dick Loseby, in
close quarter to the flag was content to carry out a watching
brief convinced the two would end up in a heap so close was
the battle, but in the end John came through to win the first
presentation of the Simon Pashley Memorial.
It was particularly nice to see victory go
to someone who truly appreciated what the trophy meant and
someone who knew Simon. The silver cup was a particularly
nice gesture as it had previously been won by Ginger Pashley,
Simon's grandfather, when racing Midgets in the 1950's.
