June - Brafield - British Championship
Report by Richard Neil
Midland youngster, Nic Grindrod stormed to
victory in the British Championship at Northampton
on Sunday 12th June. Driving his Swift FR90-.Alfa, he took
a heat and final double to collect his first major title.
The pressure seemed to be on Dick Loseby at
the start of the meeting as he was previously unbeaten at
Brafield during '94, but Harry Sayell decided to put that
to rights with a storming drive from the back to take the
lead at around half distance. Two notable retirements were
Neil Clarke (who loaded up after the race) and Steve Piggins,
both with engine maladies. Sayell took the flag ahead of
the similar VW car of Tony Haynes, Grindrod, Gary Bonner and
John Salter.
Gary Piper led the field away from a decidedly
false looking start and held on for several laps before the
chasing pack comprising Kevin Stanford, Bonner, Grindrod and
Salter made their way through. Grindrod got the better of
both Piper and Stanford on the market turn to take up the
running and he strolled to an untroubled win. The battle
for second was an intriguing one with Loseby eventually coming
through just ahead of Bonner who in turn did well to beat
Sayell.
The Championship race over 25 laps saw a flying
start from Grilidrod who was up to second behind Stadford
after just four laps with Haynes, Loseby and Sayell all chasing
after them. Grindrod soon demoted 'Flymo' and then proceeded
to pull away whilst the battle for second raged between Loseby
and Sayell. Despite Harry's best efrorts he was unable to
get past the Brafield specialist and he had to make do with
third place.
