29th & 30th August 1993, Peterborough
- European Championship Weekend, Report by Anne Sayell
Brit.Harry Sayell proved successful in his
bid to win this year's European Midget Championship and thus
secured the one title that he had not won in 13 years of competition.
German Klaus Kilianski finished second with John Calladine
running a 1300cc BMC a very creditable third.
Harry snatched pole position one of the last
to time trial with a lap time of 16.43 seconds with Klaus
on 16.97. Harry was first to the corner pulling out a quarter
lap lead on the first lap never to be challenged and making
light work of the traffic. Over the forty laps Harry pulled
further away lapping the entire field with the exception of
Klaus but virtually following him across the line at the flag.
Josef Kilianski was fourth followed by Dutchman, Toni Scheepens
and Dick Loseby, another Brit in his first International race.
The continental drivers, used to fields of less than 10 cars,
found the traffic a problem but the new smoother surface led
to less retirements and 6 out of the 7 man overseas contingent
finished the race.
The meeting ended in controversy however when
Klaus disputed the East of England Championship result believing
himself to be the winner (having lost sight of Calladine so
far in front), left the circuit refusing to have his engine
checked as required after his placing, in the European Championship.
This resulted in a one year ban effective to 1st September
1994 which is likely to prevent him from defending the World
Championship won in July.
