25th July 1992 – Ringwood
– News from Short Circuit, September 1982 by Anne Sayell
John Salter had his
first win in heat two of the Midgets West Country Challenge
at Ringwood at the end of July. John has new side pods onto
the car using Kevlar giving it a whole new look. He tested
the panels in the final when a shock absorber lug broke taking
him into the Armco, so he went home with a trophy and a broken
car.
Harry Sayell won the
West Country Challenge Cup but not before a fight or two for
supremacy from Neil Clarke out for the second time in the
ex Peter Shreeve Arrow. Neil started racing in the 60’s and
had tried just about every type of small oval formula before
discovering the Midget formula. He finished second in the
West Country Challenge, losing the lead on the final half
lap.
Wily John Weston was
on song on the day. He was in the top three in each race
at Ringwood and it was possibly only due to his tendency towards
over gentlemanly conduct on track that he did not collect
a victory on the day. John has moved into second place in
the Kent Cams/George Polley Motorsport Drivers Championship,
assisted very slightly by Gordon Pooley’s coming together
with Tony Haynes in the first heat. Gordon remains just two
points behind John with Mike Fowler unable to make the 300
mile trek to Ringwood in 4th place. Perhaps the surprise
element this season is David Hunt currently in joint sixth
place in the championship with Gary Bonner. David is another
consistent finisher who collects points almost unnoticed by
the rest of the field. David’s car has recently taken on
a much tidier appearance after his brother Peter sprayed and
did some signwriting on the car. Peter is currently looking
for a car for himself but meanwhile is David’s mentor and
chief mechanic. The end of September will see the Midgets
back at Ringwood for the Southern Championship sponsored by
ICI Autocolours.
