GP Midgets

With the June fixtures at the end of the month, the Midgets will have had only one meeting since June's issue of Short Circuit.  That meeting belonged to Harry Sayell, picking up his first hat- trick of the season, as well as both the Fretten Shield and Graham Hill Memorial Trophy on the same day at Peterborough (May 26).  This seems to confirm the VW domination for 1991, with Harry having taken 4 of the 5 major trophies contested and with 118 points is now 23 points clear of newcomer John Calladine in the Kent Cams/George Polley Motorsport Championship.

Calladine was up at the crack of dawn on the Sunday morning to make a 160 mile trip from Gloucs. to the home of Kevin Stanford in Wisbech in order to repair his car before the meeting.  John discovered a stripped diff. late Saturday evening whilst testing out a new cylinder head - Kevin had a replacement and he and Harry Sayell helped John repair the car before all three set off to the track.  John's commitment was duly rewarded with a third place in the Fretter Shield and a 2nd in the Graham Hill, both achieved from his new red grade.  Its ironic that John is Harry's closest rival at present and using an engine prepared by Harry himself!

Kevin gave Harry a real run for his money in the Fretter with Kevin leadingthe race untilfive lapsfromthe end and once passed by Harry, promptly pressured him all the way to the flag.  But, Kevin's luck evaporated in race 2 and 3, having to settle for a fourth in race 2 and clawing his way back to seventh after Duncan Long collected him in Race 3. Duncan's bad luck continued at Peterborough when a broken rosejoint relegated him in race 1, a 2nd place in Race 2 only briefly consoled him before he clipped a backmarker in Race 3 resulting in a collision with the armco and damage to no less than four suspension wishbones.  David Shreeve, Harry's mentor in 1990 is also having a spell of bad lick and he also tested the armco heavily at the meeting.  John Weston's new car made it's long awaited debut - another well turned out car thanks to Dermon McGivern's efforts.  He is experiencing some handling problems and as the panels are still unpainted is keeping everyone guessing as to its livery.  The Swift twins were exhibiting their colourful paint job but denied rumours of sponsorship from Dulux!  A delighted Stuart Haynes collected his first trophy at his second outing taking 3rd place in the Graham Hill.

After the European Championship in June, July will see the Midgets first Spedeworth meeting of the year with the National Championship at Eastbourne on the 21st.  The date and venue of the World Championship is still awaited with August a possible date and Tilburg a possible venue, where the 'traditional' Midgets are now racing.  Whilst those at Posterholt are favouring Circuit Formula 2000 chassis (with Toyota engines) but some question as to their eligibility to meet spec. has been raised and the breakaway Midget group led by Klaus Kilianski are currently racing separately.  The two groups do not appear to be able to work together at this stage though negotiations are continuing.  If necessary the World event may be staged in Britain as a last resort
