Third Sport Lucky for Cam Man
From the Dursley Gazette, 24th May 1991

AFTER six year of trying at other forms of motor racing, a Cam man has rached the top of his latest venture in just six weeks!

John Calladine (31) turned his hand to Midget Grand Prix racing earlier this year after purchasing a car from one of the formula's top drivers. Since then, his nine races have brought two victories, two second places and three other finishes in the top three.

The success comes in John's third different type of racing. First came banger racing for three years and then a further three years in Brisca Formula Two stock cars. His highest finish was a second in the latter. He was attracted to the Midget Club by its non-contact nature.

'In the Formula Two class I was forever rebuilding the car,' he explained, 'I was often fenced in practice, whereas in the Midget Formula my driving skills can show.'

His skills have shown up well so far as he currently lies second in the season's drivers championship —headed only by the reigning world champion.

Whilst restricted to 1300cc, the Midget cars are designed around acceleration and do not lack for speed. They can go from 0-60 in about four seconds — equivalent to a turbo-powered Porsche.

'It's the fastest Formula on the Oval scene,' said John. 'With the cars costing between £1,500 and £2,000 for a top car, its also comparably inexpensive with the better known Hot Rod cars costing in excess of £7,000,'

John, an MOD policeman, is supported in the pits by his brother Brian and father Ernest, making his success a real family affair. The trio will next be in action on Sunday at Peterbrough, when John will carry the prestigious red grade reserved for the star rnen.
