August 1988, Arena
Report from Short Circuit by Dave Cox
Wet weather
tyres were once again the order of the day at Arena on 28th
August when Basil Craske dominated the proceedings. John Weston
led the opening race for eight laps until Basil took the lead
to pull away for a comfortable win. Paul Rodgers moved up
to second for a few laps before Eddy Ricketts took over, Rodgers
then falling victim to Nigel Brake. A late charge from Philip
Retchless took him past Harry Sayell and Rogers to finish
fourth.
Rod McLaughlan
held the lead until lap eight when Craske came through with
Craske in pursuit. Anthony Brewer was motoring well and was
soon challenging Brake for second, going past with six laps
to run although he could do little about Craske. Ricketts
steadily worked through to third and Sayell was making good
progress until he encountered McLaughlan who was having trouble
with his wet tyres overheating on the drying track. On the
last lap as Sayell went round the outside, McLaughlan understeered
wide taking Sayell with him. Philip Retchless nipped past
to claim fourth ahead of Steve Jobson and Brake.
The last
race was a handicap chase with the wiinner of the trophy starting
just in front of the white tops. Kevin Stanford led the field
away and then held the lead for four laps when Rodgers went
past. Brake followed through to go second and Harry Lowe was
up to fourth. Sayell was on a charge and went from seventh
to fourth on the outside but got too confident and spun, stalling
in the process. Lowe dropped back as Wesbroom moved up to
third with Craske snapping at his heels. Wesbroom put up a
stern defence but Craskeeventuall went by and made short work
of passing Brake to go second. Time was running out and Rodgers
took the win with Craske closing fast. Brake was third ahead
of Wesbroom, Brewer and Ricketts.
News
update from Short Circuit, by Dave Cox
What
a difference one race meeting can make as Harry Sayell will
testify. After a suberb day's racing at the World Championships
Harry hoisted himself into second place in the race for the
Points Championship, a mere 12 points behind Basil Craske.
A week later at Arena, Basil was once again on full song while
Harry was having a quiet day, the deficit had grown to 40
pts with Basil on a total of 212. John Lowe (148pts) had dropped
to third but has now sold his car to Nigel Brake. Pressure
of work is the cheif reason for John's retirement. David Wesbroom
has had some wretched luck since he topped the points in the
early part of the season but has managed to do enough to hang
onto fourth with 137 points. Marcus Retchless (120) and Anthony
Brewer (114) are battling it out for fifth place and looking
over their shoulders for Eddy Ricketts who has been quietly
picking up points and is now within striking distance of a
top six finish.
Steve
Jobson, Philip Retchless and Paul Rodgers are also getting
close to the top six and with three race meetings before the
end of the season there is still plenty to race for.
