25th May 1986, Peterborough, East of England
Championship

DAVID
WESBROOM took the major honours at Peterborough on May 25,
winning the East of England Championship, round three of the
Angel Hotel Championship and the Davro Welding Trophy for
the top points scorer. Malcolm Goodman had the consolation
of winning the 25 lap final, while Harry Sayell was racing
his midget for the Sport Aid Fund and collected £126 with
sponsorship from the Peterborough racing club and his fellow
midget drivers.
There
were 15 starters for the East of England Championship with
Mike Fowler the early leader from Eddy Ricketts and Anthony
Brewer. Brewer slipped through to second but was already under
pressure from Wesbroom who quickly disposed of Brewer and
Fowler to take the lead. As Brewer, Goodman and defending
champion Basil Craske battled furiously for second place Wesbroom
eased slowly away to a fine win. Brewer grimly held onto second
ahead of Goodman, Craske, Paul Sinclair and Graham Sinclair.
Mike
Fowler led the Angel Hotel Championship from a rapidly closing
Wesbroom and Harry Lowe. Wesbroom harried Fowler mercilessly
until a small mistake, by Fowler, let Wesbroom through with
Lowe still third while the dicing trio of Paul Rodgers, Brewer
and Goodman found three abreast into the pit turn was one
too many and Goodman spun out. Craske was rapidly making up
places to go third but time ran out and Wesbroom took his
second win ahead of Fowler, Craske, H. Lowe, Brewer and Sayell.
Mike
Fowler set the pace in the 25 lap final pursued by Lowe and
Wesbroom. Goodman was in determined mood taking the outside
line to rapidly dispose of all three and take the lead on
lap 12. Wesbroom slipped by Lowe and Fowler to go second while
Craske moved onto the leader board. Fowler spun away third
spot and Lowe came under intense pressure from Craske while
Wesbroom was slowly closing the gap to Goodman who responded
to maintain his lead for a comfortable win from Wesbroom,
Craske, H. Lowe, P. Sinclair and G. Sinclair.
