18th October 1984 Aldershot, Rod Tanswell Cup
By Southdowner from Spedeweek 43
I walked around the pits at Aldershot on Thursday and there
they were - a gaggle of Grand Prix Midgets, with plenty of
you fans having a look at cars which have not been on the
Tongham raceway for, some say ten, some say fifteen years
- at any rate a long, long time. Weather was a trifle dicey,
and not exactly ideal for Grand Prix Midgets but they put
up a grand showing and Rod Tanswell would have been pleased
to see the weay they raced- I know at least two real old hands
who enthused over them. As I said, Rod Tanswell was not at
the meeting, not getting over the shock of becoming a grandad
(we send our congratulations to parents and grandparents)
but Rod was apparently suffering from back troubles and the
doctor said 'no go' to the meeting. Dave Smith found and able
deputy in the GPM World Champion Alf Boarer who had pranged
his car and not been able to get it back together in time
for this meeting and Alf proudly presented the fine trophies
supplied by Rod to some very keen winners.
Basil Craske won heat one in great style but then damaged
his Midget. Ray Perry won heat two but the trophy final went
to Roland Parker with Dave Scott second and Alan Riley 3rd
after a race which bought back many pleasant memories.
