13th May, Peterborough, Davro Welding Trophy
Report from Motoring News by John Hyam

Silver top driver Alf Boarer continued his domination of this season's Midget car racing retaining the Davro Welding trophy at Peterborough over 15 laps. Early race leader Dave Cox driving Dermot McGivern's car blew an engine and Mick Bonner also went out when a water hose broke. The race was also marked by a spectacular collision between Paul Holloway and Paul Sinclair in which Sinclair overturned. Jerry Pinney, Ray Coulson and Mike Fowler finished behind Boarer.

Former World Champion Bonner made no mistakes in the second race leading from start to finish over Boarer with Pinney and Coulson also placed. Newcomer Coulson in the ex-Geoff Hughes Midget led the third race but was eventually overhauled by Boarer. Pinney and Dave Wesbroom moved to striking distance of Coulson but he did enough to hold second place at the flag.

Pinney, driving the last of the Frank Boyles Fireball Midgets, had an impressive meeting and looks to be an emerging threat for the main honours later in the season. The meeting also saw the return of Alan Riley, driving the car used by Boarer in 1980.

John Lowe has bought a Mk18 Dastle chassis from Brighton based Wayne Doidge .... Dave Scott, who wrecked his car at Eastbourne earlier this month hopes to have a new car built in time for August's World Championship at Northampton.
