Wildman's Scottish - Report from Motoring News by John Hyam

SPECTACULAR midget car ace Dermott "Wildman" McGivern showed his best form in winning the Scottish Challenge Trophy at Newtongrange, Scotland on September 9.

McGivern set a cracking pace from the start and resisted a strong challenge from Alan. Riley, Basil Craske and Alf Boarer in the main placings towin his first major title. The unlucky man in the final was Malcolm Goodman, who blew an engine.

Craske beat Goodman and Boarer in the first heat, a race in which British champion Mick Bonner wrecked his car after a collision with Mike Fowler. Veteran Harry Sayell won the second race from world champion Boarer, followed home by Goodman and Ray Coulson, the latter showing his best form in the ex-Geoff Hughes car.

McGivern continued his run of form at the same circuit the next day, winning the heat from Craske, Coulson and the consistent Boarer. But McGivern missed further progression in the meeting when his timing chain broke. It left more fancied stars to dominate the final race with Craske now back to his best pace since emerging from retirement, leading home Boarer, Coulson and Dave Cox.
