The GP Midget Club will organise this year's
World GP Midget Car Championship at Swaffham, Norfolk, on
Sunday, September 12. The meeting will be televised.
For the first time, the GP Club hope to feature
an Australian driver, Graham Jones from Perth, in the event.
Also invited is American woman driver Maria Alaina Schneider,
who nearly got an invite to last year's cham¬pionship. But
the deal fell through on a question of finances.
Britain's main hopes for this year's World
GP Midget Championship are former title-holders Basil Craske
and Mick Bonner. But veteran former Wimbledon speedway rider
Geoff Hughes senior is reckoned by many as a 'dark horse'
for the title, currently held by Holland's Hank Hansen.
GEOFF HUGHES junior, the British GP Midget
champion, may miss this season's racing. He claims that lack
of finances may keep him out of the sport.
ALF BOARER who, except for taking part in
last year's European GP Midget Championship, was inactive
in 1981, is still uncertain about resuming full¬time racing.
GP MIDGET Club circles have however been
boosted by the come-backs of Robin Whall and Dave Cox, who
have both been inactive for several seasons.
MALCOLM GOODMAN, GP Midget Club's National
champion, is hoping to land a deal to race in Australia this
winter.
NAMICSA
The Namicsa-sanctioned speedway-midgets open
their season at Boston on Sunday, May 2, when 10 drivers contest
the East Anglian Championship.
Invited to compete are Pete and John Smith,
Tony Stubbs, Ian Fraser Ker, Clive 'Hellcat' Baker, Alan Fretten,
John Reade, Chris Butler, Dermot McGivern and Geoff Rumble.
Then on Tuesday, May 11, the speedway-midgets stage the first
of three England versus 'World of Rebels' test matches at
Crayford. Other likely staging tracks later in the summer
will be Hacknev and Boston.
SIX Namicsa speedway-midget car drivers have
been invited to compete in six races as part of an indoor
motorsport series at Rotterdam's Sports Palais Ahoy in the
autumn.
GEOFF RUMBLE, builder of the Dastle midget
car and former pioneer driver under Spedeworth International
in the 1960s, has emerged from retirement to race for Namicsa.
