28th June - Swaffham

Although only 13 drivers made the haul to Swaffham they produced some exciting racing. Mick Bonner claimed a hat-trick of wins but not without some close opposition. Because Mick had started the season with an experimental oversize engine - and thus not claimed any Championship points - he was up to and including this meeting a blue grade. Basil Craske commented before the first race had had difficulty seeing him on the grid...

In the first race, Jerry Pinny made a fast start, but Bonner took the lead on lap three and stayed there. Gary Pollard, with eyes on retaining his points Championship lead, came through to second, while Dan Hornby lost a wheel and Eric Fretten went out with a broken stub axle.

In race two, Bonner quickly got the lead, while Pinny held second for four laps until Malcolm Goodman, Pollard and Craske all overtook him on one lap. These three carried on the battle between them, but never looked a danger to the leader.

The excitement of the Final kept everyone on their toes, and landed Basil Craske on his head! Pinny, looking encouragingly good for a newcomer, again led, for three laps this time before Bonner again took over. Craske worked through the places to second by lap 7 and slowly closed the gap, while Goodman and Pollard battled for third. Basil pulled alongside Mick on the final bend, but then 10 yards from the flag his nearside rear wheel touched his rivals offside and Craske's car mounted the bank and rolled. Mick Bonner shared his lap of honour on the control car with Basil after what many described as the most exciting race of the season so far.

FINAL RESULT: 1st Mick Bonner, 2nd Malcolm Goodman, 3rd Gary Pollard, 4th Geoff Hughes Snr, 5th Geoff Hughes jnr, 6th 71, 7th Mike Clements, 8th Antony Brewer.
