1980

Lots of cars booked on for first meeting of the season at Arena-Essex but not enough actually turned up. Come on chaps, we know time and money is short but it's still the old problem of not enough cars (especially on biggish tracks like Arena) that stops Midgets getting the support they deserve... new 15 lap Midget speed record for the Arena 1/4 mile set by Basil Craske possibly aided by the disappearance of brakes half way through races!.. smart new car to the Bill Boarer design for Gary Pollard, some handling bugs to sort out, matching machine for Alf Boarer not finished at time of writing... Ray Rapson's rather boxy device going well in first race of the season.

6th April 1980, Arena Essex
Report from May Short Circuit by Paul Huggett

Heat One: Slightly chilly afternoon meant tyres taking a while to warm up, but after slowish start 'Bionic Basil' still managed a new 15 lap time, with Mick Bonner in pursuit. Gremlins bit the Harry Lowe car while H. was running well, but he was luckier than Eric Fretten who couldn't get out to race at all.

1st Basil Craske 2nd Mick Bonner 3rd Ray Rapson.

Heat Two: An early lead for former Autograss man Paul Graves (5th in first race) dwindled away as exhaust and other bits fell off his machine. Basil Craske spun out but came charging back, and car 20 fenced itself with con¬siderable damage. Gary Pollard car twitchy, but made fourth place.

1st Mick Bonner 2nd Basil Craske 3rd Chris Butler.

Final: Just 8 cars made the line-up for the Final, and Dave Scott's car was smoking badly at the start. However, it turned out to be an excellent dice for the lead between messrs. Craske and Bonner, Basil trying all ways to get by and almost succeeding when Mick came upon a pair of back-markers, but he managed to cut back in front with inches to spare. Both turned in 17 second laps, and lapped everyone else by the end of the 20 laps race. Despite a slight top-end misfire, Mick B. held on to his lead to start his year with a Final win.

1st Mick Bonner 2nd Basil Craske 3rd Gary Pollard 4th John Lowe.
