Monday 29th May 1972 - Ringwood - Southern
Championship
Ringwood , 29th May saw a good entry of Midgets
at this popular raceway for the Southern Championship. Race
one turned out a very close one with Frank Boyles showing
Rod Tanswell over the line followed by Bob Elson (National
Champ.) who now seems to have his car going really well, but
still often dogged by bad luck. The first twelve drivers qualified
for the big race of the afternoon.
Race Two was another Boyles benefit, for Rod
Tanswell went out with trouble after just taking the lead.
Derek Johnson then took up the challenge along with Dick Waldock
and Glenn Baker, but the three of them couldn't catch Frank
Boyles who won by quite a margin. The race finished in that
order. A further six drivers were taken from the result and
qualified.' for the championship - race three - the Midget
Southern Championship.
The cars lined up in graded order, non-qualifiers
starting at the rear. Just at this time the rain started to
fall, not much, just enough to make the track damp. However
the flag dropped and the cars were away on the 25 lap race.
What a duel there was between Rod Tanswell and Frank Boyles!
Frank tried everything in the book to get past Rod, but he
certainly met his match that day for Rod didn't falter, it
was a treat to see those two drivers fight it out. They took
the field in roughly six laps and continued at a hell of a
pace. Rod Tanswell won in superb style from Frank Boyles half
a car's length down. To give an indication of their speed
the both lapped the third place man, Bob Elson, who certainly
was not hanging about. Fourth place went to Mick Fairweather,
the only East Anglian to finish in the first six, fifth place
went to Gerald Ames and sixth to Glenn Baker. All in all a
fine race.
