Saturday 29th July 1972 - Wimbledon - Spedeworth
v MARC Report by 'Man on the Terrace' from Spedeweek no 28
and The Informer from no 29
At Aldershot recently the Spedeworth Midgets
were beaten fairly easily by the Midget Auto Racing Club after
a night of racing to remember. The return however was a different
story with the MARC having problems with Wimbledon’s mixture
of tarmac bends and shale straights.
Bob Burridge gave Spedeworth a fine start
by winning the opening heat from Martin Robertson (MARC),
with four of the Spedeworth men behind them. To points scorers
Frank Boyles and Paul Emery tangled and went into the fence.
Boyles recovered for fifth place but Emery failed to score,
although he was at first announced as the winner. A quick
check of the lap charts showed that he missed a lap. Spedeworth
led 16-5. Rod Tanswell drove magnificently to take heat 2
after Peter Stapleton (MARC) had built up a big lead. Cliff
Davis was the only other visitor to score and Spedeworth lead
29-13. The consolation race carried six points, but the MARC
took four of the six places, Paul Emery showing his best form
to win.
Peter Stapleton won the final but he was followed
home by Frank Boyles, Rod Tanswell, Daz White and Basil Craske
with Martin Robertson the only other MARC scorer. Spedeworth
won the match 43-20, full revenge for Aldershot. Let us hope
the serial will continue. A word of condolence to Tony Stubbs
who never got off the grid in his heat and had to watch his
car damaged when another car hit it. Paul Emery also retired
with damage leaving the results of the final race as first
Stapleton followed by Boyles, Tanswell, Daz White, Basil Craske
and Martin Robertson. The highest points scorer was Stapleton
of the MARC who beat Rod Tanswell by one point (Rod was the
highest points scorer in the previous match at Aldershot).
