28th October 1972, Wisbech
Report by 'The Informer' from Spedeweek no 45
The Midgets made their last appearance at
Wisbech last Saturday, 28th October. This last meeting of
the year must go down as the one with the most incident. The
first race of the evening saw a good field of cars lined up
on the grid, not so at the end of 20 laps however. I have
never seen such havoc in the Midgets in just one race. The
reason I am told was a sump full of oil dropped by one of
the Midgets in practice. This was spread fairly evenly around
the track so that everyone had his fair share to contend with.
Bob Elson, Colin Byrne, Geoff Hughes and Ben Davis all had
cars virtually written off in the opening laps. Many others
piled into cars already in trouble making, it quite a 'Destruction
Derby'. The race was finally won by Roland Parker in fine
style considering the conditions.
Race 2 was also a very good race with plenty
of incidents to thrill the crowd. Once again a number of cars
came unstuck. Frank Boyles went on to win. The last race of
the evening was a walk over for Derek Johnson who came through
the field very early in the race, with almost half a lap on
the field at the finish he made it look all so easy.
