Report from Car Advertiser & Auto News, 2nd August 1972

Chick Woodruff bought together at Snetterton two of the fastest formulas on the raceways today the giant spectacular Formula 1 Stock Cars with their big engines plus the Grand Prix Midgets powered by full race engines up to 1300cc who surprised a lot of people at the end of the afternoon.

George Ansell held the 8-lap record with a formula 1 Stock at 4 min 58 secs in the first Midget Race. David Underhill recorded 4 min 32.8 secs which surprised everyone including the midget drivers, the first race saw the most spectacular crash ever seen in Midget racing in this country, on lap 2 Car Advertisers Cliff Davis coming into the bend near the grandstand made contact with the bank and the car did a triple somersault end over end finishing the right way up with wheels and parts coming off the car in the process, thanks to the strong roll cage and a full harness part of the safety regulations laid down by PRI Davis stepped out of the car to the applause of the large crowd in the stand with a few bruises and generally shaken up. These midget men are made of strong stuff. After the wreckage was removed the race was restored. Underhill. Robertson and Chris Davis (Car Adv.) with Emery and Stubbs (Car Adv.) close behind, a very fast race, with much changing of position the result was:- 1st Underhill 2nd Chris Davis 3rd Robertson 4th Emery 5th Stubbs 6th Jopp

The Formula 1 races will be covered in our special Stock Car feature. The second midget race recorded an even faster time for 8 laps. This was won by Chris Davis In a time of 4 min. 30.8 secs. New man Joe Therstappen made a great start and held the lead for 5 laps till passed by Davis and Robertson. Smith driving the fireball midget was also in the picture but once again two young drivers Davis and Robertson made their mark. The results were: 1st Chris Davis 2nd Robertson 3rd Underhill 4th Emery 5th Therstappen , 6th Stubbs The final was a similar story but for the fact that our Ed Stubbs managed to get through from the back and challenged for 1st place. This he took on lap 6 with Chris Davis slipping into second place trying everything he knew to pass, Graham and Smith showed up well in this race. but the final result was: 1st Stubbs (new record time for 10 laps) - 5 mins 45 secs 2nd Davis (Car Adv.) 3rd Emery 4th Robertson 5th John Smith 6th Graham

John Holtham (Auto Enth.) unfortunately coming in to a bend had oil on his brake pedal his foot slipped on to the accelerator and that was that. More damage to the front - bad luck John. Congratulations Chick Woodruff and the Rochester Motor Club for organising a really slick racing programme.
