16th July, Kings Lynn 1972 (MARC)
Report from Car Advertiser and Auto News 26th July 1972
Yet again Chick Woodroffe came up with a
top line promotion slick and fast moving which seems to be
the secret of his success. The menu consisted of Grand Prix
Midgets, Mini Rods and the all action Bangers. As usual Car
advertiser were present with our Ed Tony Stubbs and the two
team cars driven by Cliff and Chris Davis. Cliff was seen
to be limping before the meeting started, it appears he suffered
a nerving at Graham Hill’s (President of the MARC) party the
night before, still these drivers are made of strong stuff.
Heat one Midgets – Fourteen cars came to the
line, after a warming up lap they were off, although it was
a shale surface it seemed fast and the racing proved it. Cars
were coming through the bends with the back hanging out which
was quite a spectacle. Ex Stock Car driver Avery starting
from the front made yet another brilliant start much to the
delight of the stock car fans. John Smith (4) and Robertson
(16) were having a real tussle behind the leader half way
though the race. Cliff Davis had throttle trouble and had
to leave his car on the top bend after much changing of position.
The result was: 1st Avery, 2nd John Smith, 3rd Roberston,
4th Underhill, 5th Emery, 6th Holtham.
Heat two – The final was very eventful and
even faster than the first. A new driver whose name escapes
me drove Arthur Knowlton’s 128 car for the first time and
on lap two he lost it in a big way hitting the fence and collecting
Holtham in the process. Three or four laps later Emery hit
the unattended car at the front end putting himself out. By
this time the crowd were really shouting on the leading batch
of drivers. An all action race with yet another win for a
stock car man. 1st Avery, 2nd Underhill, 3rd Robertson, 4th
John Smith, 5th Cliff Davis, 6th Stubbs.
