1972

7th May 1972 – Arlington
Report by The Informer from Spedeweek no14

We saw a good entry of Midges at Eastbourne on the 7th May with some 24 cars turning up for the day’s racing. Along with the Hot Rods and Bangers the Midgets put up a very good show indeed with some fine racing to thrill the crowd who had taken a chance on the weather.

Race one for Midgets was unusual to say the least, for we saw John Harmer (M59) take advantage of his position on the grid and take first place in fine style. It is always a pleasure to see an ungraded driver showing the established stars of a formula the way round. On talking to john in the pits after the meeting, he told me that this was his first win for four years. Now that you proved you could do it john, keep up the good work. What happened to the stars? Well, Frank Boyles was racing his team car at Yarmouth I suppose. Rod Tanswell came off after only a few laps with a puncture. Bob Burridge (M48) landed in the fence as did new driver Tony Willcock and John Hawkins (M98). This all happened in race one. Who said Midgets don’t give their fair share of thrills?

Race two saw Rod Tanswell storm through the field in his usual style. Not having Frank Boyles racing was a shame as when these two drivers get their teeth into a race it makes it more interesting.

Race three was won by East Anglian Basil Craske (M21) also in fine style, driving his new Fireball. He now seems to have the teething troubles sorted and is going well. I can forsee Basil getting his star grading before long if he continues the style he showed at Eastbourne.
