4th June 1972, Cross In Hand
Report by 'Southdowner' from Spedeweek no 19.
I have not yet found out which stadium 'owns'
the Jonah responsible for all the rain we have been getting
of late but wherever you are chum, turn it off please! There
was a very wet welcome for the Hot Rods and Midgets down at
the Cross. You know how the banks slope down one side towards
the raceway - they carry all the water off the rise behind
also resulted in a perpetual flooding across half the raceway.
1 saw some very tactical racin. from some of the drivers -
trying to take a line which left them clear and on the outside
as they came out of the bend before the splash but not always
did they make it and to follow a driver who was already going
the water was quite a happening. Some of the bow waves would
have done credit to a trawler.
Though Frank Boyles was missing,, Rod Tanswell
did not have it all his own way. Bob Burridge took the first
race, Rod had the second and while they were dicina for the
third, Mick Bonner was in full sail and led both to the flag.
Times were slow - over seven minutes a race - and usually
the stocks get round in under six minutes!
