1972

1st June 1972 - Aldershot – Spedeworth vs MARC
Report from London Diary by 'Man on the Terrace', Spedeweek no 19.

Well I suppose it had to happen in the end. Ever since Spedeworth started their drivers have faced challenges on the track from outside organisations. The BSCDA came to Wimbledon and lost, and since then we have seen NACO, the Scots (after they too left the BSCDA), the South Africans, the Danish Hot Rod team, the Brafield Bangers and recently the Watford Bangers Club. All have been beaten, although the Springboks and the Danes won matches in a series.

At Aldershot on June 1st (and London Diary moves abroad this week) Spedeworth's Midgets faced the Midget Auto Racing Club. After the best night's racing any of us can remember the MARC won 37-15. Of course the MARC cars are slightly more powerful than the Spedeworth, of course several of their drivers had driven at Aldershot in their Spedeworth days, but basically it was a case of some superb drivers in most beautifully prepared cars proving too good on the night. Only Rod Tanswell and Frank Boyles really matched the MARC boys.

Paul Emery gave MARC a good start by winning the opening heat with Boyles, Peter Stapleton, Tony Stubbs and Tanswell behind him. MARC led 10-5. The young Martin Robertson, fresh from six wins in nine races at Bristol, St Austell and Newton Abbot over the Spring Bank Holiday, won Heat 2 from Emery, Tanswell, Tony Stubbs, and John Holtham. MARC led 22-8. Boyles hit the fence in this one.

The final went to Chris Davis in a close finish with Rod Tanswell. Robertson, Cliff Davis, David Underhill and Barry Martin took the other scoring places. Rod Tanswell then beat Paul Emery in a match race for the top scorer's trophy. Emery spinning after both drivers used borrowed cars. "Car Advertiser and Auto News" presented this trophy, Spedeworth gave one to the winning team and "Hot Car" gave a trophy to Chris Davis for his final win.
