Ipswich Spedeweekend from Hot Car, October 1969

As Hot Car was represented by Tony Bostock in his Anglia powered Dastle Midget, let's see what went on amongst these single seaters.

Tony's Dastle, as with most, races on Goodyear Grand Prix crossplies. Having got a couple of new wide rear wheels from Dastle's Geoff Rumble he fitted some India radials - against the advice of those who said radials weren't right for Midget racing where you need gradual and progressive break-away.

Sliding out on corners is one thing, but zig-zagging around them is quite another! Despite several pressure changes things couldn't be got under control, so Hot Car pit man Chris Marfelt refitted the crossplies. This really paid off as in the first Midget race Tony led the race throughout until the last lap, when he was pipped by Mick Miller's Centaur.

That was Tony's best race ever - as the man with the mic said - and he was clocked at lap times equal to the fastest super stock cars which were previously doing lap trials for grid positions. So don't think Midgets are slow or tame - they are very hairy!

Tony did battle with the Armco fencing a couple of times during the next two races when lap times were getting even faster, with John Houghton (the Biota Mini-kit man - May Issue) knocking several tenths of a second off Tony's lap times in his Cooper powered 'Black Lawnmower'.

Footnote of interest - Midget newcomer from saloon car circuit racing, Tony Stubbs, has just bought a Dastle which once lapped the Brands club circuit in 59.3 seconds!
